Abstract

Mangrove communities that grow and live on small islands have a fairly important role ecologically, physically, and socio-economically. One effort to maintain the sustainability of mangroves is to measure the quality of mangrove health using the Mangrove Health Index (MHI) analysis. This study aimed to determine the health conditions of mangroves in the Serangan Island Mangrove Ecosystem. The study was conducted from August to October 2024. The determination of the research location used the purposive sampling method. The study was conducted at 5 observation stations with each station consisting of 3 plots. The technique of collecting mangrove vegetation data used the quadratic transect method on a 10x10 m2 transect. The method of collecting canopy cover data used the Hemispherical Photography method. Data analysis used the Mangrove Health Index (MHI) equation. The results of the study showed that the MHI value in the Serangan Island mangrove ecosystem was classified as moderate with a value of 52.55%. Moderate mangrove health conditions indicate fairly good canopy cover, density, and tree trunk diameter. However, it is necessary to improve the quality of the mangrove environment so that mangroves can grow optimally.
