Abstract

Seaweeds are classified as macroalgae that provide significant economic and ecological benefits, thereby offering strong potential for the development of seaweed aquaculture. Serangan Island is a coastal area with marine environmental conditions that fall within the tolerance limits required for seaweed cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of water quality for seaweed farming in the waters of Serangan Island. The research was conducted in October 2025 by measuring several water quality parameters, including temperature, current velocity, salinity, pH, nitrate, phosphate, ammonia, biological oxygen demand (BOD), turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO), and water transparency at 4 sampling stations. A quantitative descriptive approach was applied using simple random sampling, and the data were analyzed through comparative methods. The results showed that all measured parameters across the four stations were within the following ranges: temperature 29,83-31,67°C; current velocity 9,71–24,61 cm/second; salinity 32,83-34,83 ppt; pH 6,17-6,28; nitrate 0,35-0,43 mg/l; phosphate <0,001 mg/l; ammonia 0,002-0,033 mg/l; BOD 1,21–1,62 mg/l; turbidity 0,77-3,42 NTU; DO 5,85-6,27 mg/l; and transparency 100%. Based on data analysis, the suitability of water quality for seaweed cultivation in Serangan Island waters showed the “suitable” category for all stations. Regular monitoring is necessary to maintain optimal water quality in the waters around Serangan Island.
