Abstract

Microplastics is an emerging pollutant to all aquatic ecosystem compartments, including seagrass ecosystem in coastal area due to its small size. This study aimed to investigate the microplastics characteristics and abundance in seagrass habitat of Sanur Beach, one of touristy beach in Bali. Microplastics were extracted from seagrass sediment in three different stations with different seagrass canopy cover, sparse to dense coverage. Three microplastic types were identified from all sediment sample, with fiber as the common microplastic types identified (81.13%) followed by fragment (9.43%) and film (9.43%). There was no significant difference on microplastics abundance between the sampling sites (Kruskal-Wallis test, p-value > 0.05). The total microplastics abundance in sediment was 265 items/kg dry weight, with abundance average of 9.46 ± 5.66 items/kg dry weight. Microplastics size was ranging from 0.27 mm to 7.03 mm. Our results highlight microplastics have polluted seagrass habitat in Sanur Beach, despite the degree of seagrass canopy cover. The results also showed that microplastics was able to sink in the seagrass sediment, and potentially cross contaminated the benthic organisms through ingestion. Therefore, a further study of microplastics contamination in seagrass benthic fauna is important to understand the contamination transfer from environmental compartments to living organisms.
