Types of Setting and Characterizations of Main Character from James Mangold Movie: Ford V Ferrari (2019)

Abstract

The title of this study is Types of Setting and Characterizations of Main Character from James Mangold Movie: Ford V Ferrari (2019). This study is focuses on the analysis of setting and characterization of main character that are founds in movie and analyse the meaning. There are two aims of this study. To identify the types of setting movie and analyse the characterizations of the main characters. The data in this study were in form of image from each scene of Ford vs Ferrari movie. In this study, there were thirteen pictures analysed. Documentation method used to collect the data. The collected data analysed qualitatively based on the theory of setting and theory of characterization proposed by William Kenney. The result shows that each part of types of setting are founds in this film. Neutral Setting such as tarmac that functioned as track for car moving, the yard that have only function as a yard, or the helmet that prevent Miles’s head from fatal damage when crashed. Spiritual Setting such as Miles’s yard that become witness while he initiates punch to Shelby or the dusk when Miles and his son have a conversation, increasing intention relationship between father and his son. Setting as dynamic, the Ford GT40 MK-II, moving from starting line to finish line. And the last one is the element of setting, such as blue coat, white racing suit, black stripped white GT40, hot asphalt, million audiences, and brown chair. There are two main characters that exist in this movie, Carroll Shelby played by Matt Damon and Ken Miles played by Christian Bale. Characterization portrayal of Ken Miles, a hard-worker to his family also a humble father, stubborn to whatever the things that nonsense, high dedicated, short tempered, can’t control to what he wanted to say, big hearted and conscientious to whatever he working on.  Characterization portrayal of Carroll Shelby, a nice person, the man who always try to put calm down Miles, an articulator also negotiator, clever, leader figure, and visionary and a best friend to Miles.
