Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy & Disclosure

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy & Disclosure

The Journal Pharmaceutical Science and Application (JPSA) is committed to maintaining transparency, originality, accountability, and integrity in scientific publishing. This policy governs the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI tools and large language models (LLMs), in manuscript preparation, editorial processes, and peer review.

This policy is aligned with the Indonesian Technical Guidelines for Scientific Journal Accreditation (2026) and the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

1. AI Use by Authors

Authors may use AI-assisted technologies to support manuscript preparation, including language editing, translation, text organization, and other appropriate research-related activities.

However, AI tools must not replace the authors' intellectual contributions, scientific judgment, critical analysis, or responsibility for the manuscript.

Authors are required to:

  • Disclose the use of generative AI tools during manuscript preparation.

  • Identify the AI tool used and describe its specific purpose.

  • Verify the accuracy, originality, and reliability of AI-assisted content.

  • Ensure that all references, data, interpretations, and conclusions are accurate and verifiable.

  • Protect confidential research information and personal data.

AI-generated or AI-assisted content must not be used to fabricate or falsify research data, results, references, or scientific evidence.

2. Authorship and Accountability

AI tools, including ChatGPT and other generative AI systems, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.

All listed authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, scientific integrity, and ethical compliance of their manuscripts, including any content developed with AI assistance.

3. AI Disclosure Statement

All submitted manuscripts must include a section entitled "Generative AI Disclosure", regardless of whether generative AI was used.

If AI was used for writing or language assistance, its use must be disclosed in this section. If AI was employed as part of the research methodology, including data processing, analysis, coding, or figure generation, the relevant methodological details must also be reported in the Methods section.

Example A — When generative AI was used

"The authors used [AI tool name and version, if available] to assist with [specific purpose, e.g., language editing, translation, or manuscript organization]. All AI-assisted content was critically reviewed and verified by the authors, who take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the published work."

Example B — When generative AI was not used

"The authors declare that no generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript."

Routine non-generative spelling and grammar correction does not ordinarily require disclosure.

4. AI Use by Editors

Editors may use AI-assisted technologies for appropriate administrative or technical support, provided that such use maintains confidentiality, transparency, and editorial independence.

Any relevant AI use by the editorial team must be disclosed appropriately.

AI must not replace independent scientific evaluation or human editorial judgment. Manuscripts or confidential materials must not be uploaded to external AI systems where confidentiality cannot be assured.

Final editorial decisions remain the sole responsibility of the journal's editors.

5. AI Use by Peer Reviewers

JPSA prohibits peer reviewers from using generative AI tools in the peer-review process.

Reviewers must not use AI to analyze manuscripts, evaluate scientific quality, generate reviewer comments, or prepare peer-review reports.

Reviewers are also prohibited from uploading submitted manuscripts, manuscript excerpts, figures, tables, or confidential editorial materials to AI platforms.

Peer review must be conducted independently by qualified human reviewers to preserve confidentiality, scientific integrity, and accountability.

6. Non-Compliance

Failure to disclose relevant AI use, inappropriate AI-generated content, or violations of confidentiality may result in requests for clarification, manuscript revision, rejection, or post-publication corrective action, including correction or retraction when warranted.

JPSA reserves the right to investigate suspected violations in accordance with its publication ethics policies.

This policy applies to all manuscript types submitted to JPSA.
