The Effects of Food Waste to C/N Ratio on Composting of Paper Waste

The composting is the one alternative to increase the value of waste and usability of organic waste. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the addition of food waste and paper waste on C/N ratio and to determine the mixtures ratio of the food waste and paper waste toward C/N ratio and the quality of compost in accordance to Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 19- 7030-2004. The ratio of materials used in this research was food waste and paper namely: 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 0:1, respectively. The composting was conducted in six of Tahiron New Garden Bag 2 used as a bioreactor in this research. The temperature and pH were collected every day for 60 days. The water content was observed every 4 days. The organic C levels (%) and Nitrogen levels (%) was observed in 7 days. The 1:1 material ratio showed two times of the thermophilic stage which occurred on the 14th and 34th days for 46 oC and respectivly 46.3oC. The material ratio of 1:2 and 1:3 was able to reach the mesophilic temperature while the 0: 1 treatment did not increase temperature. The C/N ratio before composting of the 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 0:1 material ratio were 24.44, 40.60, 52.06 and 71.81 respectively. While the C/N ratio after composting of the 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 0:1 material ratio were 12.06, 37.00, 42.85 and 104.84, respectively. The mixtures ratio of the food waste and paper waste in accordance with Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 19-7030-20014 was the 1:1 material ratio treatment which have a final moisture content of 35%, final temperature of 23.3 oC, final pH of 7.2, final C/N ratio of 12.6 and final organic matter of 53%.
