AI Policy

BULETIN VETERINER UDAYANA — AI POLICY

Buletin Veteriner Udayana is committed to maintaining the highest standards of scientific integrity, transparency, and ethical publication in veterinary science. In alignment with international publishing standards (such as COPE and ICMJE), this policy outlines the acceptable use of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies by authors, reviewers, and editors.

1. Guidelines for Authors

a. Authorship Eligibility

• AI tools and large language models (LLMs) do not meet the criteria for authorship and cannot be listed as an author or co-author.

• Authorship carries accountability and legal and ethical responsibilities for the work's accuracy, integrity, and licensing—responsibilities that cannot be assigned to AI software.

b. Writing and Copyediting Assistance

• Authors may use AI-assisted tools alone to improve the language, grammar, readability, and stylistic formatting of manuscripts.

• Disclosure Requirement: If AI tools were used in writing or drafting the manuscript, the authors must transparently declare this in the manuscript (e.g., in the Acknowledgements or Declarations section prior to the References). The disclosure must include the name and version of the AI tool used and the specific purpose of its use.

Example Declaration:

'During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [Tool Name/Version] to assist with language editing and readability improvements. The author(s) thoroughly reviewed and edited the content as necessary and take full responsibility for the final contents of this publication.'

c. AI in Veterinary Research Methodology

• If AI or machine learning models are used as a primary research methodology or analytical tool (e.g., diagnostic image analysis, veterinary genomic studies, or epidemiological modeling), this must be fully detailed in the Materials and Methods section.

• The authors must provide clear documentation regarding dataset training, model architecture, key parameters, and biological/clinical validation to ensure reproducibility of the results.

d. Scientific Images, Clinical Data, and Graphics

• Authors are strictly prohibited from using generative AI to create, alter, or manipulate scientific veterinary images (such as histopathology, radiography, ultrasonography, or clinical photography).

• Conceptual illustrations or diagrams created using AI are permitted only with prior approval from the editor and must be explicitly credited in the captions.

• Data Fabrication/Falsification: Fabricating or manipulating experimental, clinical, or observational data using AI is strictly prohibited and constitutes a severe scientific misconduct.

e. Author Responsibility

• The authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, factual correctness, and originality of their manuscript, including any references generated or verified through AI tools.

2. Guidelines for Reviewers

• Confidentiality: Reviewers must not upload submitted manuscripts or any portion thereof to AI tools or LLMs. This violates manuscript confidentiality and author copyright.

• Review Reports: Reviewers must not use AI tools to draft or generate peer review evaluations. Review reports must reflect the reviewers’ independent professional judgment and expert analysis.

3. Guidelines for Editors

• Editors must preserve manuscript confidentiality and are strictly prohibited from uploading submitted manuscripts to AI platforms for evaluation, summaries, or decision-making.

• Editors reserve the right to reject any manuscript if undisclosed AI usage, AI-generated image manipulation, or other violations of publication ethics are present
