Abstract

Background: International students are expected to contribute positively both to themselves and to their home countries. Several factors that encourage international medical students to study abroad include academic competition in their home countries, limited availability of spots, financial issues, or other reasons. During their studies abroad, international students may face various challenges and difficulties.

Objective: This study aims to identify the strategies and challenges faced by international medical students in adapting to study habits in their host countries.

Method: This research is a qualitative explorative study. The research informants are international medical students from the undergraduate medical program and the short summer class physiotherapy program. Data collection was done through in-depth interviews.

Results: International students must go through various stages of adaptation, including facing academic challenges. One of the main challenges is adjusting to differences in curricula. The study also shows that language is one of the biggest barriers faced by international students. Difficulties in understanding the instructional language, whether Indonesian or English, affect their ability to absorb lecture material, participate in discussions, and complete assignments. The study indicates that psychological challenges, such as academic pressure and homesickness, also affect international students.

Conclusion: The adaptation process for international students involves academic, social, and psychological aspects, requiring significant time and effort. Social support from friends and the ability to adapt to the new educational system and culture are essential for their success during their studies.
